Mohican’s tucked into the Delaware Water Gap, about 86 miles from Queens. Easy two-hour drive, and when you pull in, you’re surrounded by woods and Catfish Pond.
It’s not your typical state-run campground. The Appalachian Mountain Club runs it, and the setup’s a mix—about twenty tent platforms, plus group sites, bunkhouses, and a full lodge with year-round rooms.
Catfish Pond is small, peaceful, and motor-free—great for paddling or just wading in. The Appalachian Trail runs right by, and there are hikes up to Raccoon Ridge and Catfish Mountain with nice views and good birding.
Facilities are pretty straightforward. Flush toilets and showers near the lodge, potable water, and a dining hall that serves meals for AMC programs. Some sites have picnic tables or fire rings, but not all.
Where Mohican threw us off was the vibe. We were expecting the family-friendly feel we’d had at AMC Harriman, but it wasn’t quite there. Maybe it was just the weekend, but it felt more like a basecamp for adult hikers than a spot for kids to run around. Not unfriendly—just not geared toward families the way Harriman is.
Bottom line: Mohican’s got a lot going for it—great location, solid hiking—but it didn’t quite hit the mark for us on the family front.
