We’ve been exploring different spots north of the city, and these hikes are perfect for a day trip—especially when you end with ice cream, because snacks on the trail are good, but nothing beats a post hike ice cream!
🥾 Rockefeller State Park Preserve (Pleasantville, NY)
This place feels like a country estate—because it was. It was part of the Rockefeller family’s land, it’s now a preserve with wide trails that are great for kids. Birdwatchers will love it here.

🥾 Ward Pound Ridge Reservation (Pound Ridge, NY)
Ward Pond Ridge is Westchester’s largest park. It has over 4,000 acres to explore. Families can stick to the easy meadow walks, while more adventurous hikers can head up to The Overlook for sweeping views.
Post-hike treat: Stop by Longford’s Own-Made Ice Cream in Rye or Larchmont—always a hit with the kids.
Bonus: Ward Pound Ridge is also one of our top three favorite campgrounds!

🥾 Teatown Lake Reservation (Ossining, NY)
If you’re looking for a hike with a side of nature education, Teatown’s the spot. The three-mile loop around the lake is easy and scenic, with wooden bridges and water views. After the hike, check out the nature center—my kids love the turtles, snakes, and other animals.
🥾 Croton Gorge Park & Old Croton Aqueduct Trail (Croton-on-Hudson, NY)
The Croton Dam is the star here. A short trail takes you right to the base of the spillway—my kids love the roar of the rushing water. From there, you can hop on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail for a longer, mostly flat walk.
Post-hike treat: Head into town and grab a cone at The Blue Pig—local dairy, fresh ingredients, and outdoor seating make it a favorite.

🍦 Main Street Sweets (Tarrytown, NY)
No matter where you hike (or camp) in Westchester, Tarrytown is always worth a stop. Main Street Sweets serves up great homemade ice cream.
