Here’s your Queens Dad Hiking guide to what to pack before you hit the trail:

🎒 Backpack

Pick something comfortable with enough room for your essentials. We like the Decathlon daypacks (10–20L)—perfect size for short hikes and they start at just $5.99! 👉 Quechua NH Arpenaz 10L Hiking Backpack

🗺️ Navigation

We use AllTrails for trail maps and tracking, but always bring a paper map or a hard copy print out as backup.

💧 Water

Water is key—especially with kids in tow. Here’s what we pack:

  • 24 oz Hydro Flask: Durable metal bottle. Easy returns if they eventually leak. The kids use these for school too.
  • 32 oz Nalgene: Lightweight plastic, holds more water. Great for hot summer hikes.
  • 1L SmartWater bottle: Cheap, refillable, and super light. A hiker favorite.

🍫 Snacks

High-energy snacks like trail mix, granola bars, and jerky. We usually stop at the halfway point for snack time—(we always stop half way for snack time!). Trader Joe’s has a ton of snack options that are great for hikes depending what your family likes.

🧥 Clothing

Layer up. Always pack a rain jacket and a hoodie—just in case.

👟 Footwear

Hiking boots or trail shoes with solid grip and ankle support.

🩹 First Aid

Bring a small kit with bandages and antiseptic wipes. My son and I tend to get scraped up pretty easily!

🧢 Sun & Bug Protection

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to block the sun.
  • Bug spray—especially if you’re hiking through woods or near water.

📣 Safety Basics

  • Tell someone your plan: Let a friend or family member know your route and when you expect to be back.
  • Leave no trace: Pack out everything you bring in.
